The seismologists and the departments in charge have been on alert these past few days in our country, observing the multiple seismic data occurring between Santorini and Crete.
As stated, yesterday by the Professor of Seismology of the University of Athens Geodynamic Institute director, Kostas Makropoulos, the earthquakes started from the middle of the "seismic arc" and are not related in any way with the mild activity of the volcano of Nisyros.
Yesterday morning, Crete was shaken by another earthquake of a magnitude of 5.3 Richter, which occurred at 3:33 in the morning. The earthquake's epicenter has been located at the same point were the previous earthquake had taken part, at about 75 km west of Heraklion, in the sea area between Crete and Santorini.
This new earthquake, which occurred in less than 24 hours apart from the previous earthquake, had a depth of 13 km.
According to preliminary information there are no reports of any major damages.
Minor Injuries in Crete.
A 65 year old woman, panicked and ran out of the house and fell and broke her leg and was immediately transported to Medical Center.
At Akrotiri, a 34 year old man "jumped" from his bed when he felt the earthquake as a result, he fell and was injured. His wife called an ambulance to transfer him to hospital.
According to official information the new earthquake was 5.3 RICHTER, coming from a distance of 247 km of Athens. The focus of the vibration was detected at sea 46 km from Santorini.
Professor of Seismology of the University of Athens Geodynamic Institute director, Kostas Makropoulos, spoke live on the show of Makis Triantafyllopoulos "Unknown M" in zougla radio and mentioned the earthquakes occurring in the South Aegean Sea in the last few days.
Mr. Makropoulos said that scientists monitor closely the volcano of Santorini and the seismic activity is intense in the region.
He stated however, that this phenomenon is not linked to the two earthquake 5.2 Richter that occurred on Thursday and on Friday in Crete.
